"This document was initiated at the Workshop on the Review of the Pelagic Surveys off Northwest Africa in the 1900s held in Bergen, Norway, from 28 September to 2 October 1998 ... The preparation of the guidelines started during the "Workshop to plan the 1999 R/V Dr. Fridtjof Nansen surveys in the northern CECAF area and the standardization of acoustic surveys in the region (Northwest Africa)", where a first version was provided. The guidelines were subsequently updated and finalized during the 2001-2007 meetings of the "Planning Group for the coordination of acoustic surveys off Northwest Africa", established by the 2001 meeting of the 'FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa"--P. iii.
